The Adoption Process:
What to Expect
Adoptions begin with an approved application, which you can complete online or in person. Next, you’ll meet with an Adoption Counselor for an interview. In some cases, a home visit is necessary before the adoption can be finalized.
You’ll be required to provide a current form of ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. Applicants are required to have a co-applicant or back up care giver.
Your adoption fee can be made via cash or credit card. In most cases, you can take your new pet home the same day!
You should expect to hear from our team several times over the first few months after adoption. We follow up on required immunizations, and also do several check-ins to ensure that both human and animal are happy with their new arrangements. Again, Cherokee Humane Society reserves the right to request and complete a home visit at any time to check on the welfare of the animal.
What does the adoption fee include?
All of our dogs are up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, are spayed/neutered, and are micro-chipped. We also heartworm test if they are old enough. They are examined by a veterinarian, and will get a bath and nail trim prior to heading home.
Each pet’s adoption fee includes:
an exam by a licensed veterinarian
age-appropriate vaccinations (Rabies, DHPP, Corona and boosters for puppies, Bordatella)
spay or neuter
microchip
deworming
a Heartworm test (ages 6 mos. and up) and current heartworm prevention
current flea treatment
dental, if needed
10-day health insurance for unforeseen illness not your fault, only to used by Cherokee Humane Society vet
Follow-up (booster) vaccinations and stitches removal (where applicable) are completed after adoption; bring your paperwork and your pet to our location or set up an appointment.
